Rethinking how molecules are designed
Molecules, the chemical building blocks of the world around us, underpin life and drive advances in medicines, ingredients, and materials that improve how we live. Historically, discovery relied on observing nature. Today, scientists can design molecules and engineer biological systems to produce them, but lengthy cycles of trial and error make development slow and costly.
Latest advances in AI open new possibilities. At Insilica, we bring scientists and AI together to reduce development costs to a fraction of those of traditional approaches, accelerate timelines, and uncover molecules and pathways that would otherwise be difficult to find.
Our visionInsilica OS
Orchestrating scientist–AI collaboration.
Insilica OS, our proprietary platform, coordinates human and agentic AI capabilities to bring out the best in both. Our scientists, trained at the frontier of European R&D in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology, contribute ingenuity, lateral thinking, and scientific judgment. Alongside them, specialized AI agents built in-house analyze vast amounts of scientific data and literature, identify patterns, automate tasks, and explore molecular and biological design combinations at scale. The platform unites these complementary strengths in a shared, streamlined workflow to design molecules with desired properties and the biological systems that produce them.
Explore our technologyFrom computational design to biological production, faster
Our approach enables us to industrialize the translation of molecular property requirements into genetic blueprints through a systematic, repeatable process that scales across applications, from medicines that treat disease to ingredients that enhance nutrition and safer, more sustainable materials. We organize this development into distinct pipelines, starting with three high-impact med-tech programs targeting applications within broader global markets collectively valued at an estimated €60 billion. These initial programs form the foundation for a growing portfolio, with future pipelines extending into new application areas.
Antibiotic-delivery siderophore
SiderophoresIn vitro validation. Siderophores are iron-binding molecules that microorganisms use to capture iron from their surroundings. Marine-derived siderophores are being explored for “Trojan horse” antibiotic delivery, using bacterial iron-uptake mechanisms to improve antibiotic entry into Gram-negative bacteria and potentially overcome specific resistance barriers.
Biosynthetic heparin
GlycansVirtual pathway engineering. Glycans are carbohydrate molecules with diverse structural and biological functions, including those involved in anticoagulation. Microbially produced alternatives to animal-derived heparin are being developed for potential applications in anticoagulation and antiviral coatings for medical devices.
NIR-II biopigments
PhycobilinsVirtual pathway engineering. Phycobilins are light-absorbing pigments naturally involved in photosynthesis in organisms such as cyanobacteria and red algae. Engineered derivatives targeting the NIR-II optical window are being explored for their potential to enable non-invasive, deep-tissue diagnostic imaging.
Grounded in science. Driven by collaboration.
Insilica is built on a team of biotechnology scientists and AI software engineers, working within a European ecosystem of companies, research institutions, and technology partners spanning discovery and industrial development. Through joint programs, we contribute molecular and biological system design, combining our capabilities with those of partners in experimental validation, scale-up, and application development to advance shared research priorities. Dedicated pipelines can also be commissioned to address specific molecular requirements, translating desired properties into molecular candidates and engineered biosynthetic pathways.
